The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for basketball on Monday evening, and Warwick High School product Lehman College standout Sally Nnamani was named CUNYAC Player of the Week for her phenomenal efforts for the Lightning in Lehman’s last three contests.
The Lightning (7-5, 2-0 CUNYAC North) went 1-2 during the break, losing to William Paterson University 77-68 and Marymount (Va.) 73-62 before winning at CCNY 73-59. For the three games, the sensation averaged 23 points, 12.3 rebounds and three assists. Nnamani recorded double-doubles in two games with 25 points and 15 rebounds against national power Marymount and 28 points and 13 caroms against CCNY. Against William Paterson University, she was one rebound shy of the mark, contributing 16 points and nine rebounds. Head Coach Eric Harrison was very happy to see Nnamani earn the award.

The Lehman College men’s basketball team (8-4 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) won for the sixth time in its last seven tries, defeating the Keystone College Giants (5-3 Overall) by a score of 81-61 Monday evening in a non-conference contest played in La Plume, Pennsylvania. The victory for Lehman improved the Lightning’s record to 3-2 on the road.
Lehman won the game by shooting lights-out from the floor and dominating on the glass. For the game, the Lightning shot a whopping 55.6 percent from the floor while Keystone College hit on just 28.8 percent of its attempts. Lehman College grabbed 41 rebounds while the Giants snatched just 27. The Lightning also made their presence known in the pain, swatting five Giant shots compared to none for Keystone College.

The Lehman College women’s basketball team (7-5 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) started off 2009 on the right foot as the Lightning picked up an impressive 73-59 victory over CUNYAC rival City College of New York (6-4 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) Sunday afternoon at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in New York, NY.
The Lightning began a string of four consecutive CUNYAC contests with a victory mostly because of yet another stellar performance by stalwart senior Sally Nnamani, as the standout scored a game-high 28 points (11-27 FG) while snatching a game-high 13 rebounds while also swatting five shots, dishing four assists, and tallying two steals. The Warwick High School product has now posted a double-double in seven of the Lightning’s last eight games. In addition, feisty guard Kelsey Ash nailed three shots from beyond the arc and dropped in 13 points, and versatile senior Monique Sampson netted seven points, grabbed eight caroms, and recorded three steals. Following the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the victory.

The Lehman College women’s basketball team (6-5 Overall, 1-0 CUNYAC) dropped their second consecutive non-conference contest, falling to Marymount University (VA) by a score of 73-62 Tuesday afternoon at the Saints’ Verizon Sports Arena in Arlington, Virginia.
In the victory for the Saints, senior guard Kathryn Wilson led the way for her squad as she put together a solid performance, netting a team-high 19 points while grabbing six rebounds. In addition, junior forward Kathleen Brown had a sensational game, as she posted a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds. She also tallied two steals in the win. Finally, it was feisty guard Terrell White putting together a fine all-around effort with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Marymount University (VA) limited their turnovers in the contest, committing just 11 while forcing 22 Lehman miscues. The Saints also netted 18 points from the charity stripe compared to 10 for the Lightning.

The Lehman College men’s basketball team (7-4 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) suffered a tough loss, falling to non-conference powerhouse William Paterson University (8-1 Overall, 1-0 NJAC) by a score of 65-64 in a rare Monday afternoon matinee played at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning had leads of six points on three separate occasions but could not hold off the Pioneers’ late surge as Lehman’s five game winning streak came to an end.
Following two free throws by sophomore guard Adam Manning, the Lightning were holding onto a 58-52 lead with 4:52 remaining. Over the ensuing three minutes, William Paterson put together an 8-0 run to take a two point lead, 60-58, with 1:41 to go in the contest. After an Alen Redzic free throw drew Lehman within a point, the Pioneers failed to score on their possession, giving the Lightning the ball with 56 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, senior standout Duane Rhoden put Lehman back on top when he buried a layup and drew a foul. After he sunk a free throw to give his team a two-point lead, the Pioneers answered right back when junior guard Joseph Ellis drilled a three pointer from the corner to put his team in front by a point with 12 ticks left.

The Lehman College women’s basketball team will return to the court Tuesday afternoon as the squad travels to Arlington, Virginia for a tough non-conference test, as the Lightning will battle the Marymount University (VA) Saints, with game-time scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Those hoping to track Lehman’s progress in the contest can get live in-game statistics by clicking here.
The Lightning have not played in a game since back on December 20th, when Lehman suffered a 77-68 defeat at the hands of the William Paterson University Pioneers. Despite the loss for Lehman, senior center Whittney Barnes led the Lightning with 18 points and nine rebounds, and fellow senior Sally Nnamani collected 16 tallies and nine boards. Standout Monique Sampson rounded out Lehman’s double-digit scorers with 12. First-year point guard Tonisha Kirby also put together a solid all-around game, netting nine points while dishing five assists and grabbing seven rebounds. The game against the Saints will serve as a final litmus test for Lehman before the Lightning get set for a string of four consecutive CUNYAC contests to start the new year. Head Coach Eric Harrison emphasized this importance of his team playing good basketball heading into the important stretch.

The Lehman College women’s basketball team (6-4 Overall, 1-0 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference contest, falling to the William Paterson University Pioneers (8-3 Overall, 1-0 NJAC) by a score of 77-68 Saturday afternoon in an intense contest played in Wayne, New Jersey.
The Lightning opened the contest with a 13-5 lead, but a 13-4 Pioneer run gave William Paterson its first lead since the opening moments at 18-17 with 8:21 remaining in the first half. That advantage stretched to as many as 10 (36-26, 2:15), and the Pioneers entered the locker room with a 39-32 lead. William Paterson’s April Smith did most of the damage for the Pioneers during the opening 20 minutes, shooting 8-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the foul line for 20 points off the bench.

12.16.08 | Women's Swimming
The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its weekly swimming and diving awards on Monday evening, and Lehman College women’s swimmer Luisa Garcia was among the award winners as she was named Swimmer of the Week for her tremendous performances in the pool for the Lightning during Lehman’s meets against Hunter College and Adelphi University.
The team dropped a pair of contests to Hunter College 54-40 and Adelphi University 109-81, but Garcia swam very well. Against Hunter, the Manhattan Center product set personal best times in the 200-yard freestyle with 2:21.80 and the 500-yard freestyle with 6:30.59. She won both events. Additionally, she finished second as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 1:59.57. Against Division II Adelphi, She captured second place in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.61 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:12.09. Following the announcement, Head Coach Peter Kiernan was very happy about the news.

The Lehman College men’s basketball team (7-3 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) continued their stellar play during the 2008-2009 season as the team captured its fifth straight victory on Saturday afternoon, downing non-conference opponent USMMA King’s Point (2-5 Overall, 0-0 Landmark) by a score of 65-60 at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning used another quality balanced effort to solidify another hard-earned victory.
In the five-point victory, Lehman College led by as many 17 points before hanging on for the win. Leading the way for the squad was senior guard Duane Rhoden who scored a game-high 18 points (6-9 FG) to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Xavier Garvin also contributed mightily to the win by netting 14, snatching three rebounds and tallying two steals. Senior center Alen Redzic, making his APEX Center debut, scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished five assists and swatted four shots. Finally, it was first-year standout Jonathan DeJesus dropping in 12 rebounds and snatching nine caroms. Following the victory, Head Coach Steven Schulman believed the team played a nice all-around game, but believes the team needs to finish stronger.

The Lehman College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams returned to action last night at the APEX Aquatics Center as the squads battled the Adelphi University Panthers in non-conference meets. On the women’s side, the Lightning (2-6 Overall, 1-0 CUNYAC) fell by a score of 109-1, while the men dropped their fourth consecutive meet, losing by a score of 125-103.
The Lightning did not go down without putting up a strong fight as on the women’s side, standout Luisa Garcia captured two second place finishes and one first while continuing her assault on the record books. After breaking a record in the 200 Backstroke event at ECAC’s last weekend, she shattered the mark again by completing the event three seconds quicker last night. Basilisa Alonso gave a strong performance while finishing third in the 200 Freestyle in recording the fastest time in that event since 1976 when Lehman Hall of Fame Swimmer Elaine Hochuli set the current record. Basilisa’s time of 2:18.77 is within five seconds of that astounding mark.
