2.26.10 | Men's Indoor Track & Field, Women's Indoor Track & Field

The City University of New York Athletic Conference will be holding its 2010 men’s and women’s indoor track and field championships this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Armory Track and Field Center located at 216 Washington Avenue in Manhattan. The Lehman College women’s squad will be looking for its third consecutive conference crown, and eighth title in the last 11 years, while the men’s unit will be aiming for its third straight title, and third overall.

The Lehman College women’s team will depend heavily on the performance of Veteran Dorothy Jean-Pierre as she will compete in the 800 meter dash as well as the 1500 meter dash, and she will also run a leg on the 4x400 relay. In addition, Michaelle Garcon production will be important, as she’ll be expected to put together a hearty effort in the 1500 meter dash. Jumper Shanoy Francis, as well as thrower Janina Browne, and sprint specialist Jillene Sennon will also be heavily relied upon to accumulate points for a Lightning squad hungry for another crown. Lehman College head coach Lesleigh Hogg gave his thoughts on the team’s chances this Sunday.

The Lehman College athletic department announced today that former standout student-athlete and two-time All-American Pete Charles has been an Assistant Coach for the Lehman College cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field teams. The addition of Charles to Head Coach Lesleigh Hogg’s coaching staff will have a tremendous impact on the development and progression of all of Coach Hogg’s student-athletes in the upcoming academic year.

“Pete Charles is an individual who sacrificed a lot and worked extremely hard to accomplish the things he did while competing at Lehman College, and now he has an opportunity to further his legacy here at the college by guiding and providing knowledge to our student-athletes of six teams here in 2009-2010,” Hogg said. “He knows what it takes to win and how important preparation and practice are. I am very glad that he has joined our staff.”

Nobody has had a busier year than Lehman College cross country and track and field Head Coach Lesleigh Hogg. His hard work paid off not only when he guided three of his six teams to CUNYAC championships, but also when he named men’s outdoor track and field Coach of the Year following the conclusion of the outdoor season.

The fact that Hogg coaches six sports at Lehman means that there is never an offseason for the successful skipper. Since his arrival at the institution in 1996, his teams have won a combined 14 championships. Simple math brings fans to the conclusion that Hogg has averaged winning at least one championship per academic year since his arrival, an accomplishment that is truly remarkable.

The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its Indoor Track and Field award winners Friday afternoon, and recipients from Lehman College dominated the accolades. Firstly, Lightning skipper Lesleigh Hogg was named Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year for helping his two teams capture CUNYAC championships in 2009. In addition, on the men’s side, Pete Charles was named Athlete of the Year, while Andre Gouldbourne was tabbed as Rookie of the Year. Jase Franklyn, who put forth a tremendous year for Lehman, was coined as an All-Star, as was Irfan Anwar. On the women’s side for the Lightning, Lauren Lourick, Dorothy Jean-Pierre, Chianne Ashman, and Jillene Sennon were tabbed as All-Stars.

Coach Lesleigh Hogg receiving the Coach of the Year honor is just another highlight the long-tenured Lehman skipper could add to his resume. Since 2000, Hogg has led his indoor track and field units to a combined nine conference championships (seven for the women, and two for the men). Lehman’s women’s squad has won the title two consecutive years and three of the last four, while the men’s team has won two straight championships (08’ and 09’). His guidance this season was critical for the Lightning as the team rallied from a slow start to gain momentum and eventually put forth its strongest efforts during the latter stages of the season.
