The Lehman College women's basketball team took break from its pre-season practices to participate in the American Cancer Society's Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday morning at Orchard Beach Park. Registration began at 9:00am, and the walk started at 10:30am. The walk was one of many which were held throughout the country to fight against breast cancer. Members of Lehman's cross country and cheerleading teams also participated in the walk.
Student-athletes from Lehman College's women's basketball, cross country, and cheerleading teams, as well as coaches from all of those programs, walked the 3.2 miles of the beach course. The walk enables the American Cancer Society to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer prevention and early detection information, help ensure that all women have access to mammograms and follow-up care, and provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for people facing breast cancer.
“It's great to participate in something for such a great cause, and I'm happy that coach Eric Harrison is organized this for the second year in a row,” Simone Byrd said. “The opportunity to walk for a great cause such as the American Cancer Society is something that we felt could make a difference in the fight against cancer as well as support those already fighting the disease.”
Lehman College women's basketball head coach Eric Harrison and his squad are encouraged many of the Lehman coaches and student-athletes to participate in this walk, and in essence, the turnout was impressive. The walk serves as a great way to bring awareness as well as fight against Breast Cancer. Donations are appreciated by the ACS, but are not required to participate. Each participant from the Lehman College group will receive a complimentary t-shirt for the walk.
The Lehman College women's basketball program will continue its support of the American Cancer Society, as they will participate in the second annual CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer basketball classic on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Lehman College. The event will feature the women's basketball team battling non-conference opponent SUNY Old Westbury at 1:00pm, and that will be followed by the men's basketball team battling SUNY Purchase at 3:00pm.
