The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners late Tuesday afternoon, and Lehman College was well represented. In soccer, Lightning standout Amirouche Ait-Hamouda Rookie of the Week honors, while Oscar Kamalu of the men's cross country team was tabbed as Runner of the Week.
Hamouda was praised as soccer's Rookie of the Week after his phenomenal showing in the Lightning's two contests last week against New York City Tech and Baruch College. Against the Yellow Jackets back on Wednesday, September 23rd, Hamouda broke a 2-2 tie with a goal in the 64th minute to give his a team a one-goal lead, an advantage the Lightning would not relinquish as Lehman won its first game of the season. Then, three days later against the Bearcats at the Met Oval, Hamouda was at it again, netting two goals in a losing effort as the Lightning gave Baruch all it could handle despite falling 3-2 in the contest. Soccer head coach Joe Andre' gave his thoughts on Hamouda receiving the honor.
“Amirouche certainly was very deserving of receiving this honor this week,” Andre' said. “He has been extremely vital in our team turning the corner in recent games, and I believe he's only going to get better. He's playing great for us right now and I'm very confident in his ability to help this team win.”
Oscar Kamalu was named Runner of the Week in cross country for his phenomenal performance in the York College Invitational this past Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. In the men's 8K run, Kamalu came in third place, crossing the finish line at 31:07. His consistency has been encouraging this season, and head coach Lesleigh Hogg praised Kamalu for receiving Runner of the Week honors
“Oscar has served as a model of consistency for us this year,” Hogg said. “He has led by example and has done all of the necessary things that I've asked of him, and he's really sprinting towards the CUNYAC championship meet with a full head of steam. I'm extremely proud of his efforts.”
The Lehman College men's soccer team returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 4:00pm CUNYAC match at York College, while the men's cross country team will participate in the Staten Island Invitational on Sunday morning at Van Cortlandt Park.
