Walking For a Good Cause

The Lehman College women's basketball team took a break from its preseason practices to participate in the American Cancer Society's Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday morning, October 17, 2010 at Orchard Beach Park. Registration began at 9:00 a.m. with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m. The walk was one of many which were held throughout the country to fight against breast cancer.

Student-athletes and coaches from Lehman College's women's basketball team walked the 3.2 mile beach course. The walk enables the American Cancer Society to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer prevention and early detection information, help ensure that all women have access to mammograms and follow-up care, and provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for people facing breast cancer.

“It's great to participate in something for such a great cause, and I'm happy that coach Eric Harrison has organized this for the third year in a row,” Alicia McDaniel said. “The opportunity to walk for a great cause such as the American Cancer Society is something that we felt could make a difference in the fight against cancer as well as support those already fighting the disease.”

Lehman College women's basketball head coach Eric Harrison and his squad encouraged many of the Lehman coaches and student-athletes to participate in the walk, resulting in an impressive turnout. The walk serves as a great way to bring awareness as well as fight against breast cancer. Donations are appreciated by the ACS, but are not required to participate.

The Lehman College women's basketball program will continue its support of the American Cancer Society, as they will host the third annual CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic on Saturday, December 11, 2010 and Sunday, December 12, 2010 at Lehman College. The event will feature four women's games on Saturday, highlighted by Lehman hosting national power Amherst College, while the Sunday slate features three men's games, with the Lightning hosting NCAA participant SUNYIT.
