The Lehman College women’s basketball team (9-12 Overall, 7-3 CUNYAC) picked up an impressive conference victory on Wednesday evening, turning back the Bloodhounds of John Jay College (0-21 Overall, 0-10 CUNYAC) by a score of 80-56 at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
In the victory for Lehman, the Lightning were led by the stellar performance of standout Leslie Mencia, as she scored a game-high 29 points (11-22 FG) to go along with nine rebounds. She drained seven treys on the evening in one of the more dominating performances the conference has seen this season. In addition, point guard Paula Robinson continued her recent solid play as she contributed with 13 points, eight assists and a pair of steals, and Tiana Rosa netted six points and snatched 10 rebounds on the evening. Following the victory, head coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts.
“We knew we needed to have this one with our remaining conference schedule being so difficult,” Harrison said. “I am impressed by the team effort we put forth here this evening. Hopefully we’ll carry this momentum into Hunter College on Friday evening.”
Despite the loss for the Bloodhounds of John Jay College, it was Jessica Lirio posting a team-high 15 points while snatching six rebounds, while Chantelle Smith connected on five of her 11 shots from the field and finished the evening with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and three steals. Finally, it was Zadoora Carson netting 11 points and snatching five rebounds.
The Lightning dominated in a majority of the facets of the game. The Bloodhounds committed 35 turnovers to Lehman’s 19, and the Lightning recorded eight blocks to one for John Jay. Lehman also dished 19 assists to the Bloodhounds’ 10, and the Lightning connected on 37.8 percent of their attempts from the field (31-82) while holding John Jay to 28.1 percent shooting (16-57).
Lehman College will return to action on Friday evening as the Lightning will travel to the Hunter Sportsplex to battle the Hawks, with tip-off scheduled for 5:00pm.
