This Sunday, the Lehman College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will compete in the 2010 City University of New York Championships at Icahn Stadium. The Lightning men will be shooting for their second consecutive title and second overall, while the women's squad will be looking for its second title in three years, and fifth program crown overall.
On the women's side for Lehman College – the Lightning will be expecting big things from veterans Jillene Sennon and Dorothy Jean-Pierre. Sennon will be competing in the women's 100 and 200 meter dashes. She'll be favored in the 100 after prospering in that event throughout the regular season. Pierre will compete in the 800 and 1500, and her times in those events will be crucial. The Clara Barton High School product medaled in the 1500 during the indoor championships, and she'll hope to put forth a similarly impressive performance this Sunday at the outdoor championships.
Also for the Lehman women, Simonie Moore will compete in the 400 and the long jump events, and Michaelle Garcon will compete in the 1500 and the 5000. Lightning mainstay Janina Browne will participate in the hammer throw event and the consistent Shanoy Francis will showcase her talent in the long and triple jump events. Head Coach Lesleigh Hogg gave his thoughts on what he believes his women's squad can accomplish this Sunday.
“Our women's team is poised to do well this Sunday,” Hogg said. “We are going to put forth our best efforts. York College is going to be our stiffest competitor, and I believe they're at an advantage because they're deeper than us, so we'll have to compensate for that by recording strong times and finishing ahead of their athletes in a number of events.”
For the Lightning men – veteran Irfan Anwar will compete in a whopping three events – including the 800, 1500, and 5000 events. Andre Gouldbourne will run the 100 and 200 events, and Oscar Kamalu will hope to put forth strong efforts in both the 400 and 800 competitions.
As for the field events, Philip Akogu will compete in the shotput and discus events while also competing in the 110 and 400 meter hurdle competitions. Coach Hogg believes his men's squad is capable of enjoying success this weekend.
“We have a lot of competitors on this team that have won a championship and know what it takes to be successful on the biggest stage, and I feel as though our guys are going to show their best this Sunday. York College is going to be a very tough competitor, but I believe we'll keep the pressure on them and make things interesting.”
The action begins at Icahn Stadium on Sunday morning at 9:00am with the throwing events.
