The 16th annual CUNY Athletic Conference Men's & Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships took place on Sunday, as the Lehman College men's squad was shooting for its second consecutive title while the women were searching for their first crown since earning co-championship honors with the York College Cardinals back in 2008. Both Lightning units put forth the heartiest of efforts, but both York College's men's and women's team claimed victory and captured the 2010 CUNYAC titles.

On the women's side, York College won the meet with 194 points on route to their fourth straight conference crown and fifth program title. Hunter College came in second place with 141 points and the Lightning placed third with 138 points. The Cardinals' Alexandra Nkrumah did a tremendous job in leading her team to victory as she took first place in six events (400 meter dash, 100 meter hurdle, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 4x400 relay) while also finishing third in the 800 meter event.

Despite the Lightning placing third, Lehman College had a number of standout performances including the efforts of Dorothy Jean-Pierre. The Clara Barton High School product won the 800 meter event (2:22.89) while also placing first in the 1500 meter competition (5.08:35) and the mile. Jillene Sennon placed first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.39, and Janina Browne finished in first place in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.82 meters. Standout Michaelle Garcon placed first in the 5000 as well with a time of 21:09.18 and claimed second in the 1500 by finishing at 5:11.89. Lightning head coach Lesleigh Hogg was very proud of all of his female competitiors.

“Our ladies did a tremendous job today, giving it their all and fighting for every point, and I'm extremely proud of the way they competed not only today, but throughout the course of the season,” Hogg said. “This unit was very together and always worked hard to improve their times, and the fight I saw out of them today was incredible. They did a wonderful  job.”

On the men's side, York College took home its seventh outdoor title and the first since 2006 with 142 points, only six ahead of Medgar Evers College (136) CCNY slotted third with 98 points.

York College's Kenny Jacquet dominated the distance events, winning both the 5,000 meters (17:10.01) and the 10,000 meters (37:33.12). York also came up big in the 4x400 relay, placing second overall and first among senior colleges, which secured the victory for York late in the meet. The Cougars' Kadeem Cambell took home MVP honors as he won the triple jump (13.61m), placed second in the javelin (43.98m) and finished third in both the long jump (6.28m) and the high jump (11.66m) to lead the Cougars to a second place finish.

For the Lightning, standout Irfan Anwar picked up a pair of second place finishes in the 800-meter run (2:01.14) and the 1,500 meters (4:16.06) as Lehman finished in fourth place. The 1500 meter time was a personal best for Anwar. Oscar Kamalu placed second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.80, Coach Hogg praised the Lightning men following the meet.

“Our men – like our women's squad – gave it everything that they had, and I couldn't have asked them to compete harder,” said the Lehman coach. “We finished in fourth place but we feel that the fourth place result is not indicative of our efforts. I'm very proud of all of them.”
