Lehman SAAC Ready to Lend Helping Hand to Local Community

Oct. 11, 2011

BRONX, N.Y. - No matter what community one lives in, there is always someone who can use a helping hand from time to time.

Enter the Lehman Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Over the course of the Fall semester, Lehman SAAC, comprised off athletes from nearly every varsity sports team at the college, will partner with several local and national organizations to assist in improving the lives of those in the local Bronx community.

The group's community activism will begin this coming Sunday when, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society and Lehman's Office of Community Engagement, it takes part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Orchard Beach.

One day later in preparation for the favorite holiday of every child with a sweet tooth – Halloween – Lehman SAAC will help decorate trick-or-treat bags that will eventually be donated to the Lehman College Child Care Center.  Then on the big day at the end of the month, the children of the center will be given the bags to use as they trick-or-treat around the Lehman campus.

Though Fall has yet to fully take hold in the area, before long the temperatures will dip and the winds will begin to howl.  Soon the call for Spring will ring out.  With that warmer weather and abundant sunshine in mind, Lehman SAAC will partner with students from Fordham University and New York University to plant bulbs at various locations in the Bronx in anticipation of that first day when the first buds begin to appear on the trees and Spring is near.

Keeping in mind that there are those among us that struggle just to keep warm during the cold winter months, Lehman's student athletes will close out the semester by using the month of December to solicit donations of winter hats that will go to the inhabitants of local shelters in the Bronx during the holiday season.

Their schedules filled with class and team commitments, Lehman's SAAC members understand the importance of giving back and have taken on the challenge.

Undoubtedly those on the receiving end thank them.
