BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's and women's swimming and diving teams are about to host the 2014 CUNY Athletic Conference Championships in the APEX, from Thursday, January 30, through Saturday, February 1. Admission to the three-day event is free of charge, though tickets can be reserved in advance by going to www.cunyathleticconference.com/tickets.
The men's team is looking to defend its title, as the Lightning claimed the crown in 2013. Including last year, Lehman has won five championships, the most of any other school in conference history. Lehman finished in second place during the regular season this year, with only one loss – 127-113 to first place Staten Island. The two teams were neck-and-neck during the regular season, with third place Baruch not far behind. The three teams will vie for the title, in what is sure to be a close decision.
Leading the way this year will be a pair of veterans and a newcomer. Senior Ramon Peralta (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) and sophomore Anthony Preda (Long Island City, N.Y./Basha) have already qualified for the ECAC Championships, while freshman Carlos Alonso (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) is a finalist for the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year award.
On the women's side, a pair of seniors will be closing out their college careers at the Championships – Adriana Navarrete (Lima, Peru/Law & Community Service) and Aytaissa Estime-Kirkpatrick (New York, N.Y./LS3). Both already hold school records for Lehman, and will keep the Lightning in the middle of the pack.
The CUNYAC preview, which details the entire conference, can be found here.
