English's Productive Night Leads Women's Volleyball Past CSI in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – For the seventh consecutive season, the #3 Lehman College women's volleyball team has advanced to the CUNY Athletic Conference Semifinals, after defeating #6 the College of Staten Island in a CUNYAC Quarterfinal match, 3-0, in the APEX Main Gym on Wednesday evening.

Senior middle blocker Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had a very productive night, tallying a match-high 22 kills, scoring 25 points, and had a hitting percentage of .611. She also dominated on the defensive side as she recording 12 digs, produced two solo blocks, and had a block assist.

In the first set, English slammed home back-to-back kills to give Lehman (13-13) an early 8-2 lead. After the Dolphins (11-14) rallied to tie the match at 13, the Lightning turned the contest back into their favor by scoring the next seven points, highlighted by two more kills from English. The Lightning went on to win the first set, 25-18.

The second set started off as a back-and-forth affair with Lehman having a narrow 8-7 lead. English once again put her team in the driver's seat by converting another set of back-to-back kills to put Lehman up by three. The Dolphins would keep hanging around throughout the set as Lehman held a narrow 20-18 advantage. English once again answered the challenge, by recording three consecutive kills, to give Lehman a more comfortable 23-18 lead. Two straight errors from CSI clinched Lehman's second set victory of the evening.

In the third set, Staten Island jumped out to an early 4-2 lead. The Lightning would respond by scoring the next three points, capped off by a service ace from junior setter Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella). Later in the set, CSI cut the deficit to 19-18. Lehman would continue the trend of fighting off the Dolphins' rally by stringing together three consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of kills from English, to give the Lightning more breathing room. English's 22nd kill of the night put the Dolphins on the brink at match point. An error by CSI clinched the set and the match for Lehman.

Senior outside hitter Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) helped anchor the defense with 16 digs. She also helped out Lehman's offense by tallying nine kills. Freshman outside hitter Lindsay Pantaleon (New York, N.Y./George Washington) produced 12 digs of her own, while freshman defensive specialist Lizette Medina (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added 10.

The Lightning have earned the right to face the defending conference champion #2 Baruch in the CUNYAC Semifinals. The match will take place on Friday, on the campus of Baruch College, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Bearcats defeated #7 John Jay in the CUNYAC Quarterfinals in straight sets.
