LEHMAN SOCCER SEES SEASON COME TO AN END IN 2-0 LOSS TO COUGARS IN CUNYAC QUARTERS

Box Score

The Lehman College soccer team (6-12 Overall, 5-4 CUNYAC) saw its bid for a CUNYAC championship come to an end as the Lightning, who came into the 2009 CUNYAC tournament as the No. 5 seed, fell to the No 4. seeded Cougars of Medgar Evers College (8-9-2 Overall, 5-3-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 2-0 Wednesday evening at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY.

The Cougars dominated the first half in terms of scoring opportunities, as Medgar Evers out-shot the Lightning by a margin of 12-2 as a majority of the game's first 45 minutes were played in the Cougars' zone. Lehman College standout goaltender Michael Hintze did a fine job of keeping Medgar Evers at bay, however, as he made five stops and kept his team in the contest. After 45 minutes of play, the teams were scoreless.

Things remained scoreless until the 75:46 mark when the Cougars would finally break through for a goal. Kyle Stephen would receive a pass from Duane Trellis and bury the ball past Hintze, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Medgar Evers would ice it at the 87 minute mark when Kyle Stephen would bury his second goal of the contest on a penalty kick, ending all hope of a Lehman College comeback.

For Lehman, Hintze finished the evening with eight saves while Cougars goaltender John Ajirotutu posted a shutout and made four stops. Medgar Evers out-shot the Lightning 19-7 for the game, and the fouls were even at 13.

For the Lightning, the season is looked at as a success. In their first year as a varsity club since the late 90's, Lehman College rallied from an 0-9 start to finish the season 6-12, posting victories over the likes of York College, Hunter College, and Medgar Evers College down the stretch of the season. With many players returning, and head coach Joe Andre' likely to recruit hard in the offseason, the Lightning should be right back in contention and ready to make another run at a conference title in 2010.
