The Lehman College women's basketball team (2-6 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury (6-1 Overall, 2-1 Skyline) by a score of 61-58 in overtime as part of the 2009 CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the APEX Center. All proceeds made from the day benefit the American Cancer Society.
Despite the defeat for Lehman College, the Lightning were led by newcomer Dorothy Hunte who put forth another strong effort by dropping in a team-high 17 points (7-17 FG) to go along with seven rebounds. Kelsey Ash added 10 points and four assists, and Melissa St. Louis netted nine points, snatched 10 rebounds, and dished two assists. After the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the day and the game.
“Anytime you have a chance to bring awareness to cancer and help raise money for cancer research, it's always a heart-warming thing and for the second year in a row, I was glad to see people supporting the cause and supporting this program,” Harrison said. “As far as the game is concerned, we fell a little bit short today. We didn't execute as well as we could have in certain areas, but we don't have time to dwell on this because we play St. Joseph's of Long Island on Monday.”
In the victory for Old Westbury, Krystina Agard dropped in a game-high 19 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds. Brittany Jones put forth a strong effort with a double-double, netting 12 points and snatching 13 rebounds, and Avery Josey added 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers shot 31.8 percent from the field (21-66), while the Lightning connected on 33.3 percent of their shots (22-66). Both teams committed 24 turnovers apiece, and the Panthers out-rebounded the Lightning 53-48. Lehman did have 14 assists compared to Old Westbury's six.
The Lightning return to action Monday evening as Lehman travel to Patchogue, NY to battle the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College of Long Island in a non-conference game, with start-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
