The City University of New York Athletic Conference announced its baseball All-Stars for the 2009 season on Wednesday afternoon, and Lehman College was represented in a big way as shortstop Andrew Rosario and pitcher/infielder Gilbert Garcia were both tabbed as First Team All-Stars, while catcher/DH Amadoernesto Guzman was awarded Second Team honors.
Garcia was an offensive powerhouse for the Lightning this past season, pacing the squad in multiple categories. One of only three players to participate and start in all 29 of the team's games, the right-handed slugger led the team with a .392 batting average while scorching a team-high 15 doubles and recorded a club-high 28 RBI's. In addition, his 61 total bases were good for second on the team, and his 16 walks and 22 runs scored were both team-bests. His 38 total hits were good for second on the squad.
Andrew Rosario finished up his Lightning career on a high note, establishing himself as one of the better hitters in the conference. Perhaps his most impressive statistic was his 40 hits – a team best. He smashed four homeruns and drove in 20 runs while accumulating a club-best 64 total bases. His 21 runs scored were good for second on the squad, and his eight doubles placed him third on the team in that category. His offensive prowess this season was extremely impressive.
Finally, Amadoernesto Guzman, coined by some as the heart and soul of the team, put forth a tremendous season at the plate. The Cardinal Hayes High School product posted a batting average of .315 while clubbing a team-high four homeruns and tallying seven doubles. His 28 hits placed him fourth on the squad, and his patience at the plate earned him 15 walks – a total good for second on the team. Head Coach John Quirk is extremely proud of all of his All-Stars.
“It was a rough year for us, but these three guys played their hearts out and left everything they had on the baseball field,” Quirk said. “Andrew played hard for us this year, and Gil was an absolute monster for us in his second year. I'm glad I have him for one more season. Amadoernesto also produced for us this year in a big way and I couldn't be more proud of him.”
