MEN'S VOLLEYBALL FALLS BEHIND EARLY, RALLIES TO DEFEAT YELLOW JACKETS IN FOUR

The Lehman College men's volleyball team (7-5 Overall, 4-2 CUNYAC) downed New York City College of Technology Yellow Jackets (3-6 Overall, 1-4 CUNYAC) by scores of 26-30, 30-16, 30-27, and 31-29  Thursday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The victory gave the Lightning its seventh victory in the past 10 matches after the club started the season 0-2.

 

In the victory for Lehman College, junior sensation RJ LeBlanc put forth a terrific performance, recording a team-high 19 kills to go along with 10 digs. Nate Martin tallied 16 kills to go along with nine digs and four service aces while Kelvis Castro added eight kills and 12 digs. Freshman Angel Fernandez had a stellar performance, recording a team-high 38 assists. Following the match, Lehman College head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.

 

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, dropping that first set, but I felt we did a great job of recovering and turning things around after that,” Lucena said. “This team is really getting on a roll, and the scary thing is that we can only get better from here. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the multi-match on Saturday.”

 

Despite the loss for the Yellow Jackets, Johnny Santana tallied a match-high 27 kills to go along with 12 digs while hitting .234 on the evening. Senior outside hitter Paul Rhodes tallied 10 kills to go along with eight digs, and Vern Phillip recorded 12 digs and six kills.

 

The Lightning will travel to Hunter College to play in a multi-match on Saturday afternoon. Lehman College will battle the Hawks at 11:00am before taking on the Beavers of the City College of New York at 3:00pm.
