LEHMAN COLLEGE ANNOUNCES ATHLETICS FACILITIES IMPROVEMENTS AND UPGRADES

Student-athletes and fans at Lehman College are buzzing about the new and enhanced athletics facilities on the Bronx campus. Major changes that took place include the following:

Lights and a sprinkler system on the South Field will allow for night games in Lehman Lightning varsity baseball, softball, soccer and it's growing intramural programs.

Five outdoor tennis courts were resurfaced with DecoTurf, the same surface used at the U.S. Open's Arthur Ashe Stadium as well as the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing and Athens. Bleachers for spectators were also installed.

A 2010 Chevrolet Express Hybird 15-passenger van will bring our athletic van fleet to five that will carry Lehman student-athletes to away contests.

Spectator bleachers were also installed at the South Field, and outfield fences were added for baseball and softball competition. Colorful banners highlighting the Lehman Lightning softball, baseball, soccer, and intramural programs also fly on the South Field light poles.

A new sports-themed wall mural was installed in the Main Gym at The APEX Center and the gym floor was re-finished.

The Apex Aquatic Center has new lane lines, backstroke flags and 10 new Daktronics touch pads.

"These changes will enhance what is already one of the best Division III athletic programs and facilities in the New York region," said Lehman's Director of Athletics, Dr. Martin L. Zwiren.

The APEX Center is an acclaimed work of architecture and the APEX Aquatics Center has been used by Olympic Gold medalists Cristina Tauscher, Jenny Thompson, Lea Lovelace and the Badger Swim Club. It is also used by the College's men's and women's varsity swim teams and countless students and community residents enrolled in swimming classes throughout the year.

"We are pleased and proud to give our hard-working athletic teams and the entire Lehman community superb facilities to use and to compete in," he said. "We're seeing more and more fans watch our men's and women's teams competing and we've made a major effort to make the fan experience more comfortable and enjoyable."

Funding for all projects with the exception of the South Field were realized by APEX income initiatives and a very strong group of client centered rental and other revenue based programs. Dr. Zwiren wishes to thank "Rene Rotolo, and the Campus Facilities Office staff for their assistance with improvements to the South Field."
