Lightning Swimming Bursts Out of Starting Blocks with Win Over Mt. St. Vincent

BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman men's and women's swimming and diving teams got the season started in strong fashion on Thursday night as the Lightning defeated visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent 197 to 151 at the APEX Aquatics Center.

In his first ever college meet freshman Abel Dupres stole the show by setting a school record in the men's 100 meter freestyle with a time of 49.10, which surpassed the previous record of 49.19 held by Darnell James.  Dupres also captured a win in the 1000 meter freestyle (11:19.08) in addition to helping the 200 meter medley relay team (1:43.49) claim first in its race.  Also garnering top finishes for the men were Ivan Srdanovic (200 free, 1:54.57) and Chip Shala (100 back, 1:05.38). 

For the women senior Basilisa Alonso swam to three first place finishes, boasting top times in the 200 free (2:20.20), 100 fly (1:10.25), and 500 free (6:31.08).  In each win, no Dolphins swimmer was within 15 seconds of her finishing time.

Junior Adriana Navarrete matched her teammate's exploits as she swam past all challengers in the 50 free (27.27), 100 free (1:03.34) and 100 back (1:22.94).  Particularly impressive were her two wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke events which followed one after the other.

The Lightning returns to the pool on Saturday afternoon when the team travels to William Paterson University for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
