The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Tennis Coaches have voted Lehman's Taishawn Brownlee as their Sportsmanship Award Winner.
Brownlee, a senior,who joined our program with limited experience often shows how one can compete fiercely yet with grace. He tries to win every point, game, set and match, yet is able to give a call to an opponent if he is not 100 % sure of his call.
In a hotly contested match this season with the outcome in doubt, his opponent made not one but two questionable line calls. His reaction was to simply ask, "are you sure of your call?". After being confirmed, he continued playing, eventually losing in a second set set tiebreaker.
Taishawn then calmly went to the net to congratulate his opponent, then immediately went over to the opposing coach and congratulated him as well. That is what a true sportsman, in any sport does. It was the essence of Taishawn. He tried, he competed fairly and we were all so very proud of him.
