Peter Kiernan begins his 38th year with the Lehman Athletics Department in 2021.
During his tenure at Lehman, Kiernan has been instrumental in all facets of the aquatics program. Since the inception of the APEX in 1994, he has been the Aquatics Director and the Head Coach of the APEX Swim Club (a USS age group swim team), as well as Head Coach of men’s and women’s swimming and diving.
A 1980 graduate of Lehman where he also earned a Masters Degree in Education in 1989, Kiernan was a three-time captain and four-year letter-winner in men’s swimming, establishing school records in the 1M while winning the Metropolitan Conference Championships in the 200 and 400 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly Events. He was also a two-year member of the Track & Field team, winning silver medals at CUNY’s in Pole Vault and Decathlon, setting a school record in the 1980 CUNY Outdoor Championships.
As coach, Kiernan was instrumental in re-establishing both the men’s and women’s programs to a championship level. Most recently, his teams captured four straight CUNYAC titles from 2006-2009 and in 2012 the Lehman men’s team finished second overall in the CUNYAC Championships.
A native of New York City, Kiernan resides in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
