MEN'S TENNIS TEAM OPENS UP SEASON WITH NON-CONFERENCE DEFEAT TO USMMA KING'S POINT

The Lehman College men's tennis team (0-1 Overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) dropped their season-opening match, falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy King's Point Mariners (1-0 Overall, 0-0 Landmark) by a score of 6-3 Friday afternoon in King's Point, NY.

 

The Mariners set the pace of the match by capturing two out of the three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, USMMA's team of Jonathan Butanis and Steven Barrows downed Lehman's pairing of Miguel Carela and Daniel Jones by a score of 8-3. No. 3 doubles saw the Mariners' Everett Smith and Mark Aufmuth defeat the Lightning's duo of James Mariani and Joseph Veras 8-3. Lehman's lone win at doubles came when Raul Santana and Manuel Podlecki defeated Jeff Gulitus and Davis Hume, 8-6 in a very intense set.

 

When play switched over to singles, the Mariners captured four of the six singles sets to claim victory. USMMA's Hume, Butanis, Barrows and Aufmuth all won their matches. Hume turned back Podlecki, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Butanis beat Carelo, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to give the USMMA a 4-2 lead. Barrows put the Mariners up 5-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jones, and Aufmuth ended the day with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Yongda Leung. Lehman's lone victory were at No. 1 singles (Santana over Gulitus, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8) and No. 5 singles (Rabiedra Hansraj over Smith, 6-3, 6-1)

 

The Lightning will return to action on Monday afternoon as the team will play its home-opening match against the Hunter College Hawks in a CUNYAC clash, with match-time scheduled for 3:30pm. The match was originally scheduled for this past Thursday, but rain postponed the contest until Monday.
