LEHMAN COLLEGE MEN'S TENNIS TRIPPED UP BY STATEN ISLAND, 9-0, IN CONFERENCE PLAY

Box Score

The Lehman College men's tennis team (0-3 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) dropped a conference match, falling to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (3-3 Overall, 1-0 CUNYAC) by a score of 9-0 in a match played earlier this afternoon at the CSI Tennis Center.

Play began with doubles, and CSI got the benefit of a conceded flight at the No. 3 position, winning by default. Already up 1-0, the Dolphins scored another couple of wins in doubles, one by way of a thriller at the No. 1 position.

After Anton Vilinskiy and Robert Hargraves scored an 8-4 win in No. 2 doubles over Lehman's pairing of Miguel Carela and Rabiedra Hansraj, play was still going strong at No. 1, where CSI's duo of Joe Taranto and Riad Hamai were battling it out with Lehman's standout combination of Raul Santana and Ryan Magsino. The netters traded points, until ultimately CSI had a chance to seal the match. On three occasions, the Lightning countered by breaking match point and keeping play alive, and finally, after an 8-8 result, a 10-point tiebreaker was needed. There, Taranto and Hamai powered to a 10-4 win in the tiebreak to win the match 9-8 (10-4). After doubles play, CSI led Lehman 3-0.

CSI used the momentum it gained during its doubles victories as a springboard into singles competition, where the Dolphins defeated the Lightning in all six sets. At No. 1 singles, Konstantin Trofimovich scored a 6-0, 6-0, win over Santana, and shortly after, Hargraves, at No. 5 singles, scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over the Lightning's Joseph Veras. CSI's Georgio Dano then picked up a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 4 over Carela. Taranto scored to a 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 3 over Hansraj, and in the afternoon's final match to finish, Vilinskiy, playing in the No. 2 position for CSI, moved past Magsino, 6-1, 6-2.

Lehman was scheduled to return to action tomorrow afternoon against Mount Saint Mary at the APEX Tennis Courts, but the match has already been postponed. There is no word yet on when the match will be made up, but Lightning fans are encouraged to keep it posted to www.lehmanathletics.com regarding all the latest developments regarding Lehman's tennis schedule.
