The Lehman College men's tennis team (1-3 Overall, 1-2 CUNYAC) picked up its first victory of the season, defeating the Cardinals of York College (0-3 Overall, 0-2 CUNYAC) by a score of 7-2 Tuesday afternoon in a match played at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx.
The Lightning set the pace for the match early, capturing all three doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, Lehman's standout combination of Raul Santana and Ryan Magsino raced past York College's Mark Greene and Hugo D'Oliveira by a score of 8-2. The Lightning's duo of Miguel Carela and Rabiedra Hansraj picked up the victory at No. 2 doubles over the Cardinals' Esteban Ruiz and Kenan Kajtezovic 8-1, and at No. 3 doubles, Lehman's Joseph Veras and James Mariani won their set in come-from-behind fashion, rallying from a 4-1 deficit to defeat York's Roque Reyes and Luis Herrera, 8-5.
Lehman's success in the doubles play carried over into singles competition, as the Lightning would capture four of the six singles sets to account for the final result. At No. 1 singles, Santana downed Greene 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 singles saw Magsino outlast O'liveira in a terrific back-and-forth affair, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. Hansraj downed Ruiz 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and Carela closed out Kajtezovic 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. The Cardinals did solidify wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, as Reyes and Herrera defeated Mariani and Veras, respectively.
The Lightning will hope to build off of their first victory of the 2009 campaign when the team returns to action Thursday afternoon to host St. Joseph's College (Long Island) in a non-conference match at the APEX Tennis Courts, with match-time scheduled for 4:00pm.
