MEN'S TENNIS TEAM SOLIDIFIES FIRST VICTORY OF 2010 BY TURNING BACK YELLOW JACKETS

Box Score

The Lehman College men's tennis team (1-2 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) picked up its first victory for the 2010 campaign on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Yellow Jackets of New York City College of Technology (0-4 Overall, 0-3 CUNYAC) by a score of 7-2 on the campus of York College.

The Lightning took the lead after doubles play, capturing two out of the three doubles sets. At No. 1, it was Lehman's David Chang and Miguel Carela turning back City Tech's Ahmed Dirhalleh and Sebastien Francois by a score of 8-6. The Lightning's Joseph Veras and Larry Harvey nailed down a victory at No. 2 doubles by beating the Yellow Jackets' Cliford Pierrot and Kadeem Levine by a score of 8-4. City Tech won the third doubles by default as the Lightning didn't have enough players to form a third doubles unit.

When play switched over to singles, the Lightning captured all five sets that were actually played. City Tech won the No. 6 singles set by default as the Lightning could not court a sixth player. At No. 1 singles, it was Chang beating Francois by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. Garcia bounced Dirhalleh 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 2 singles. No. 3 singles saw Harvey down Kadeem Levine 6-0 and 6-2. City Tech's Pierrot fell to Lehman's Carela at No. 4 singles, 6-0 and 6-1, and at No. 5 singles it was Veras downing Swie Seng Ling, 6-0 and 6-0. Following the match, Lehman College head coach Zack Davis gave his thoughts.

“It feels great to get that first victory, and hopefully a win like this can get us rolling,” Davis said. “We came out today determined to nail this one down, and I like the fire that we showed. Hopefully this is the beginning of a winning streak for us.”

The Lightning will return to action on Thursday afternoon as Lehman will take on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in a CUNYAC match at the APEX Tennis Courts, with match-time scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
