MEN'S TENNIS FALLS 8-1 TO YORK COLLEGE CARDINALS IN CUNYAC ACTION

The Lehman College men's tennis team (2-8 Overall, 1-6 CUNYAC) dropped a conference match to York College on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Cardinals by a score of 8-1 in Jamaica, NY.

 

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, it was York's combination of Ayman Busat and Charlton Distin defeating the Lightning's pair of Shiva Devarinti and Miguel Carela by a score of 8-3. The Cardinals' Michael Lateef and Hugo D'Oliveira turned back Lehman College's David Chang and Dean Garcia by a score of 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and finally at No. 3 doubles – in perhaps the most competitive match of the afternoon – it was York's duo of Erick Giron and Akins Simons defeating Lehman's Marcos Coto-Batres and Alex Linde by a score of 9-7.

 

When play switched over to singles, York College captured five of the six singles sets to account for the 8-1 final score. At No. 1 singles, it was Busat silencing Devarinti 6-0, 6-2. No. 2 singles saw Lateef beat Chang, 7-5, 6-2. D'Oliveira downed Garcia, winning by retirement after taking a 4-0 lead. The Lightning's lone singles victory came at No. 4 when Carela outlasted Distin 6-1, 1-6, 10-7. No. 5 singles saw Simons down Coto-Batres 6-3, 6-3, and finally, it was Giron beating Linde at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

 

The Lightning will return to action Friday afternoon as Lehman will battle the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a CUNYAC match, with start-time scheduled for 3:30pm.
