The Lehman men's tennis team opened its 2011 campaign with a 7-2 loss to City University of New York Athletic Conference rival, Hunter College, on a balmy day in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon.
The Lightning's two wins came in No. 5 singles, where sophomore
Philip Akogu defeated Wilfredo Garcia 6-4, 6-3, and No. 3 doubles, where
Marcos Coto-Batres and
Cesar Andrade were victorious 8-4.
In other singles action, Lehman No. 1
Raul Santana fell to Luis Quintero 6-3, 6-1; No. 2
Michael Tal was defeated by Arthur Kapetanakis 6-2, 6-1; No. 3
Jahi-Abasi Jabbar lost 6-3, 7-6 to Thomas Lin; Andrade dropped a close No. 4 match to Mark Goldfinger 6-4, 6-3; and Coto-Batres was on the losing end, 7-6, 6-4, in his No. 6 match.
Hunter's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams of Quintero and Lin and Goldfinger and Kapetanakis dispatched their Lehman counterparts 8-2 (Santana/Tal) and 8-5 (Jabbar/Akogu) respectively.
Lehman returns to action next Tuesday against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
