For the second straight match the Lehman men's tennis team was delivered a gut-wrenching loss, falling 5-4 to visiting Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx to drop its overall record to 1-4.
Lehman started on the right track, taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 pairing of
Jahi-Abasi Jabbar and
Cesar Andrade knocked off Rob Ramirez and William Cheung 8-4, while
Philip Akogu and
Marcos Coto-Batres handled their No. 3 counterparts 8-6.
Jabbar and Andrade continued their success in singles action as well, with Jabbar defeating Ramirez in No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2, and Andrade topping Cheung 6-1, 6-4 in No. 4 competition. Lehman's No. 1,
Raul Santana took the first set, 6-1, against Raymond Postadan, but could not complete the win as Postadan came back to win the second set 6-4 and then take the tiebreaker 10-8.
Of the remaining singles matches, the No. 5 matchup of Alexis Perez and
Philip Akogu was the closest the Lightning came to pulling out the win, as Perez stopped the Lehman sophomore 6-4, 7-5.
Lehman returns to action on Tuesday when it faces New York City College of Technology in a CUNYAC matchup.
