BRONX, N.Y. - Given the unenviable task of opening its 2012 season against the defending City University of New York Athletic Conference champion Hunter Hawks, the Lehman men's tennis team was unable to muster much of a challenge, dropping a 7-2 decision on the APEX tennis courts.

Lehman's two victories came in No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Hunter grabbed the early lead in the match, taking No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-1 behind the pairing of Luis Quintero and Robert Sosman, who defeated Michael Tal and Philip Akogu.  Damon Ellingson and Arthur Kapetanakis breezed by Cesare Andrade and Ben Cirilo 8-2 to win No. 2 doubles.

Andrade put up the Lightning's best fight in No. 2 singles, where he managed to capture the first set from Kapetanakis, 6-4, before having to retire with the match all square and the third set in favor of Hunter, 3-2.

Quintero made quick work of Tal in No. 1 singles, slamming him 6-0, 6-1; Akogu fell 6-0, 6-3 to Ellingson in No. 3 singles; Marcos Coto-Batres managed to win just two games in losing to Sosman 6-1, 6-1; and Alex Linde couldn't solve Binh Luu, dropping the match 6-1, 6-2.

Cooper Union comes visiting the Bronx on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. matinee.
