BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team held close for the first twenty minutes, but could not handle the John Jay Bloodhounds on Thursday evening, losing 83-49. John Jay is now tied for second place in the CUNYAC with a 5-1 record, while Lehman drops to 1-4 in the league.
Lehman had the lead throughout much of the first ten minutes of the game, and led by as many as five, on a jumper by freshman Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) at the 12:10 mark. John Jay would then go on an 8-0 run, and led 25-21 with 8:21 to play. The John Jay lead would extend to 14 points at the half, 39-25.
The Lightning got off to a hot start in the second half, and when junior guard Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) made a pair of free throws just 1:23 in, the lead was down to ten points at 39-29. That was as close as Lehman would get for the rest of the game.
In sum, Powell led all scorers with 25 points, making eight baskets, including four three-pointers. She added seven rebounds, five steals, two assists, and one blocked shot. Navarro, who leads all of Division III in three-pointers made per game, had 18 points, including four baskets from behind the arc. Junior forward Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y./Taft Educational Center) led the team with nine rebounds.
John Jay's Simone Victor led the Bloodhounds with 23 points, making eight of her 13 shots, including 6-of-9 from three-point range.
The Lightning will host City College on Saturday, January 12, at noon. Lehman will be hosting Alumni Day that day, as dozens of alums have already registered to return to the APEX. An Alumni Game will take place at 2:00 p.m., with a formal reception to follow the men's game, around 5:00 p.m.
