Lightning Win Conference Opener

Box Score

New York, NY - The Lehman College (3-3:1-0) women's basketball team scored an 82-64 victory over host John Jay (1-2:0-1) in the CUNYAC opener for both schools.

Amely Del Rosario and Jennfier Navaro carried the load for the Lightning.  The dynamic duo each played the entire game while accounting for 49 of the teams points.  Amani Lightborne, the CUNYAC Player of the Week, Yarmese Jones and Tiara Youmans rounded out the rest of the scoring for the Lightning.

Del Rosario was only 7 of 26 from the field but was an impressive 13 of 17 from the charity stripe in scoring 29 points.  She was also credited with eight assists and four steals.  Navaro only made five shots from the field but they were all from behind the arc.  Coupled with a five of six evening on the foul line she ended the contest with 20 points.  Lightbourne added 18 and was eight of 13 from the field.  Jones, the was Lightnings top rebounder with 9 added 11 points.  Tiara Youmans rounded out the Lehman scoring with four points.  All of Lehman's points were netted by the starting five.

"Today's victory was a great start to the CUNY campaign," commented Eric Harrison in a post-game interview.  "To beat a quality opponent on the road was impressive."

The first quarter was a back and forth affair with neither team owning a lead larger than five points.  The teams ended the quarter knotted at 18.  Lehman was able to take a 53-31 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks in part to converting several Bloodhounds turnovers into points during the second stanza.  Two and half minutes into the third quarter, the Bloodhounds were able to tie the game at 39.  With the game tied at 47, the Lightning went on a 7-0 run to take control of the contest. Nursing a seven point advantage, Lehman scored the final four points of the third quarter to earn its first double digit advantage of the game.  The Bloodhounds briefly cut the deficit to nine but never seriously threaten the rest of the way.

The game was won on the foul line where the Lightning lived all evening.  Lehman was 25 of 34 from the charity stripe while the Bloodhounds were a measly 2-7.  John Jay did dominate the boards out-rebounding the smaller Lightning 55-38.  However, Lehman's high pressure defense was able to force 25 turnovers.

The Bloodhounds were led by Brianna Cunningham.  In 28 minutes of action, coming off the bench, she scored 17 points while grabbing a game high 20 rebounds.

The Lightning will take the Thanksgiving break off before returning to the APEX to host Medgar Evers next Friday night.
