Box Score Miami, Fla. -- To kick off their trip down south for the holiday, the Lehman College women's basketball team dropped a 74-65 decision over FDU-Florham in the first day of the Hoop MIA D3 Holiday Shootout Tuesday afternoon in Miami.
Lynda Fields led the Lightning (3-5) with 26 points and two rebounds and three assists in the losing effort. Amely Del Rosario posted 17 points along with five boards and eight assists, while Shakia Artist fell one rebound shy of a double-double (14 points, nine rebounds) with six blocks.
The Devils (7-2) were paced by Kendrea Williams, who led four players in double figures with a team-high 17 points in the victory. Rachel Groom chipped in with 15 points and nine boards, while Alyssa McDonough earned a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
On the day, the Lightning shot just 36.4 % from the field, while Florham shot 30-for-63 (47.6%) including a red-hot 51.5% in the first half to move ahead in the game early on. They were outscored by the Devils in the paint 46-30, while also converting 24 points off 24 Lehman turnovers.
In the first half, Lehman lost the edge on the boards with a 24-19 rebound advantage. After having a brief 5-2 lead to start the game, the Lightning fell behind thanks to FDU-Florham's commanding 30 points in the paint as they went into halftime trailing 41-31.
Moving to the second half, the Lightning fought back after trailing by as many as 14 points with an 11-1 run to get back to single digits as they closed out the third only down 50-47. However, FDU-Florham would capitalize by not allowing a Lehman field goal the last 3:29 of the fourth as they closed out the win.
The team will have one more game down in Florida as part of the Hoop MIA D3 Holiday Shootout Wednesday, when they face off with Eastern University. Tip time is set for 2:00 p.m. and live stats will be made available on Eastern's website.
