Brooklyn, NY – Despite 19 points and 11 rebounds by
Krystal Pearson, the Lehman (3-3:2-1) women's basketball team dropped a hard fought battle against Brooklyn (4-1:2-0) 56-53.
Amely Del Rosario and
Lynda Fields added 11 points apiece.
The game started slowly as both teams combined for only 18 points after the first quarter (10-8 Brooklyn). The Lightning outscored the Bulldogs 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 25-20 at halftime. In the third it was all Brooklyn as the Bulldogs. Midway through the third with the game tied at 30, the Bulldogs hit back to back three pointers to take a six point lead and an advantage they would not surrender. Brooklyn was able to stretch the lead the 10 before settling on a nine point lead, 44-35, at the end of the quarter. A lay-up by
Salima Sangare with 1:25 remaining brought the lead down to two. However, that would be as close as the Lightning would get. The Bulldogs made 3-6 foul shots in the final minute to secure the win.
Justine Vento paced the Bulldogs with 12 points.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball. Lehman shot 16-65 (24%) from the field while the Brooklyn was 20-79 (25%). The Lightning owned the advantage from the charity stripe making 18 of 24 while the Bulldogs were 9-14. Brooklyn shot the ball better from behind the arc. The Bulldogs were 7-32 compared to 3-22 for Lehman.
The game was a rematch of last year's CUNYAC final in which the Lightning prevailed in overtime.
The Lightning return to action on Friday night when they host the College of Staten Island at 5:00 PM.
