STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Lehman College men's tennis team won a stunning upset up on Friday in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC Championships, as they won at the College of Staten Island, 5-2.
It is the first time in over a decade that the Lightning have advanced past the first round of the playoffs.
Lehman (6-10, 3-4 CUNYAC) entered the match as the tournament's fifth seed, while the Dolphins of Staten Island (6-9, 4-3 CUNYAC) had been hosting as the fourth seed.
Lehman got off to a strong start in doubles play, as freshman
Jason Strudwick and sophomore
Carlo Francisco won 8-3 at number one doubles. Junior
Frankelly Ortiz and freshman
Christopher Velez prevailed at the third spot, 8-4.
In singles play, Strudwick, twice the conference Rookie of the Week winner this season, won the critical match on the number one singles court, coming away with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Ortiz and senior
Al Joseph Dubouzet both won their matches, sealing the victory for Lehman.
Lehman will now travel to Queens College on Sunday where they will face top-seeded Hunter College in the semifinals at 12:00 p.m.
