Softball Splits Doubleheader at Baruch

New York - The Lehman College softball team split a CUNYAC doubleheader with Baruch College in a pair of games played on Randall's Island on Tuesday.  The Bearcats won the opener, 2-1, but the Lightning took the rubber match, 7-4.  The team is now 9-22 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

Despite falling 2-1 in game one, Diamond Villegas was the story.  She and Tiffany Adames collected all of the Lightning's hits, two apiece.  In the circle, she tossed a complete game, allowed two runs and struck out 14.

Lehman took control immediately in game two with four runs in the first.  Villegas walked.  Genesis Paulino followed with a pop fly that the third baseman dropped allowing Villegas to go to second.  Adames drove in Villegas with a single.  Caitlin Vernon walked to load the bases.  From there, Andrelina Gil cleared the bases with a hit to right.  Lehman added single runs in the third and fourth and 6-0 heading into the middle of the fourth.  Villegas drove in one of the runs with a ground out.

Baruch rallied in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four times and pulling within 6-4. Lehman got an insurance run in the fifth to earn the win.  Paulino led off with a single.  She moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.  The game was called after five innings due to darkness.

The Lehman College softball team returns to action on Thursday, April 19, when they travel to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania for a doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge.  The first game is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
