Staten Island, NY – The Lehman College softball team dropped their first two games at the CUNYAC Softball Championship falling to CSI 15-1 and to John Jay 3-2. The Lightning end the year with a mark of 13-20.
In the opener against Staten Island, the number two seed, the Dolphins plated six runs in the bottom of the second to take control. Lehman's lone run came in the third when junior catcher
Caitlin Vernon belted a two-out solo home run to put the Lightning on the board. The Dolphins added five runs in the third and four more in the fifth to round out the scoring.
After an hour rain delay the Lightning battled John Jay in an elimination game. Earlier in the day the Bloodhounds fell to the top seed Hunter. Lehman jumped out on top in the first as
Stephany Cruz reached on an error to lead off the home half of the first.
Diamond Villegas then proceeded to single to right moving Cruz to second. After a double play,
Maria Gilfilan singled to right scoring Cruz. The Lightning threatened in the second and third but could not deliver a clutch hit leaving a runner on third in the second and the bases loaded in the third. The Bloodhounds scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. In the home fourth the Lightning once again left the bases loaded, failing to score. In the sixth the Bloodhounds added to their lead assisted by a pair of Lightning errors. In the home sixth the Lightning also left the bases loaded. In Lehman's final at bat, Gilfilan led off the frame with a double down the right field line. After a pair of walks, the Lightning once again had the bases loaded. Maria Delgado was credited with an RBI on a ground ball out to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the Lightning were not able to complete the comeback.
Villegas ended the year with a mark of 9-11. In the nightcap she struck out 11.
