Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener To Yeshiva

Box Score Throggs Neck, N.Y.  -  The Lehman College women's basketball team opened its '21-'22 season on Sunday with a 64-50 non-conference loss to hosts Yeshiva University at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  The Lightning go to 0-1 record, while the Maccabees improve to 1-0 mark.

Head coach Eric Harrison, who is in his 23rd season at the helm of Lehman, fielded eight (freshman) players making their collegiate debut on Sunday and the squad jumped out to a 16-14 first quarter lead.  However, Yeshiva outscored Lehman 13-10 in the second period to take a one point advantage (27-26) going into the intermission.

In the second, the Maccabees' experience paid off as it outscored the Lightning off fast break points (19 to 7), while shooting 53 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to paced the hosts to the victory.

Guard Mojisola Shokeye led the offense for the Lightning scoring 16 points, while grabbing seven boards and four steals.  Center Brianna Barnes had her first collegiate 'double-double' with 12 point and 13 rebounds. Barnes also had six steals, while guard Kimberly Garcia added eight points for Lehman.

The Lightning return to action on Friday when they travel West Hartford, Conn. to take on Bard College at the University of St. Joseph's-CT Tip-Off Tournament at 8 pm ET.
