Head Coach Steve Schulman

Steve Schulman has transformed Lehman College into one of the most successful and respected programs in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) and the Atlantic Region. During Schulman’s tenure, the Lightning have posted six winning seasons in a seven year span while also leading his team and an Impressive 118-74 record (.614)  during his tenure.

Under Schulman's guidance, the Lighting have captured a variety of titles including a Hudson Valley Athletic Conference Championship in 2001 (HVAC), three CUNYAC North Division Championships (2002, 2004, 2005), four ECAC berths (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and, in 2004, Lehman’s first CUNYAC Championship since 1979, an accomplishment that also landed Lehman in the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Along the way, coach Schulman has earned plenty of personal honors. In 2001, his first year at the helm of the Lightning, Schulman was named HVAC Coach of the Year. Then in 2002, he was named the CUNYAC Coach of the Year, an honor he would earn again in 2005 as the Lightning recorded a second consecutive 20 victory campaign.

Schulman came to Lehman after spending six seasons as the top assistant coach at Binghamton University (Binghamton, NY). While at Binghamton, he played a major role in the program’s transition to Division I athletics and helped lead the Bearcats to their fourth best record in school history in 1998-99. Prior to Binghamton, Schulman spent four seasons under the tutelage of Bob Schlosser at Division III power Elizabethtown College (Elizabethtown, PA). There, Schulman helped lead the Blue Jays to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1993. In 2002, the Blue Jays advanced to the Division III National Championship game and finished second in the nation.

Schulman started his college coaching career in 1989-90 when he served as the graduate assistant coach at Ithaca College under Head Coach Tom Baker, the winningest coach in the school's history.

Over the years, Schulman has established a reputation as an excellent recruiter. In his 17 year coaching career, Schulman has recruited three All-Americans, three Conference Rookies of the Year, 13 All-Conference players and six 1,000 point scorers.

Schulman received his BA from Syracuse University in 1989 and his MS at Ithaca College in 1990.  Along with his coaching duties at Lehman, he is the Director of Physical Education and Athletics at the High School of American Studies at Lehman College, a specialized high school in the New York City Board of Education system. Schulman also serves as the Atlantic Region Chairman on the NCAA Division III Basketball National Committee. Schulman and his wife Kimberly and son Jake reside in Hastings-on Hudson, NY.
