The Lehman College women's volleyball team (4-2 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match, falling to the William Paterson Pioneers (8-1 Overall, 0-1 NJAC) by scores OF 25-21, 5-25, 18-25, and 13-25 Saturday afternoon in Lehman College's Auxiliary Gymnasium in the Bronx.
The Pioneers were led by the brilliant performance of freshman Megan Maher who finished the day with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 15 digs, 10 assists, and five service aces. In addition, junior Kelly Helfrich was also tremendous for William Paterson as she completed the afternoon with 11 kills to go along with 14 digs, and senior Mailyn Rodriguez put forth four kills and 12 digs.
The Lightning received contributions from a number of different players, and the team's cohesiveness allowed Lehman to capture the first set of the afternoon. The Lightning were paced by sophomore Jillian Acevedo who put together another stellar outing by tallying six kills and recording 17 digs. In addition, freshman sensation Gerri-Ann Martin continued to make her mark in her first season at Lehman as she added six kills, 12 digs, and a service ace, and freshman Lisa Jagdeo set the ball beautifully all day long, as she totaled 17 assists.
Following the match, Head Coach Daniel Skilins believed his team played very well despite the defeat.
“We played very well today, and I'm proud of how we came out ready to play in this match,” Skilins said. “This team was missing some girls today, but we still came out focused for the most part and we were able to capture a set. I believe we can build on the way we played in this match.”
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Lightning as Lehman will host the Manhattanville College Valiants on Monday evening at the APEX Center, with match-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
