The Lehman College women's basketball team (8-7 Overall, 3-2 CUNYAC) returned to the APEX Center for their first game at home in just about six weeks, but the squad fell to the Bearcats of Baruch College (11-4 Overall, 5-0 CUNYAC) by a score of 68-53 Friday evening in the Bronx.
The Lightning and Bearcats renewed their rivalry and played for the first time since Baruch College downed Lehman College by a score of 71-60 in the 2008 CUNYAC title game back on February 22nd at City College of New York's Nat Holman Gymasium. The Bearcats were led by senior guard Karlee Whipple who netted a game-high 23 points to go along with four steals and three rebounds. In addition, junior forward Kalea Davis posted a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and junior guard Christina Kelly added 11 points, snatched eight caroms and tallied three steals.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, senior forward Sally Nnamani netted 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, swatted three shots and tallied three steals. In addition, fellow senior forward Whittney Barnes notched a double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Following the game, Head Coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the defeat.
“This was a tough loss this evening, and I wish we would have come out a little more aggressive,” Harrison said. “Baruch was very quick tonight and showed tremendous poise and intensity, and their team deserved to win the game. Now, we'll take the weekend off and on Tuesday we'll welcome the No. 4 ranked team in the Country, Amherst College, to the APEX Center, so hopefully we'll regroup and be ready to play against them.”
The Lehman College women's basketball team will battle Amherst College for the second time this season on Tuesday evening. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
