The Lehman College women's volleyball team (11-17 Overall, 6-3 CUNYAC) suffered a tough loss on Thursday evening in their regular season finale, falling to the Pioneers of William Paterson University (20-7 Overall, 5-3 NJAC) by scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, and 14-16 at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
The Lightning came extremely close to closing out the match in the fourth set of the evening, as Lehman held a 23-17 advantage and needed just a pair of points to take the match, but the Pioneers rallied for eight consecutive points to force a fifth and decisive set. The Lightning again came close to winning the match in set five, as Lehman held a 14-12 lead, but William Paterson's four consecutive points won the match for the Pioneers.
Despite the loss, standout Gerri-Ann Martin put forth an incredible performance on the evening, posting a match-high 21 kills to go along with 14 digs and a pair of aces. Jennifer Winkler chipped in with 16 digs and seven kills, and Lisa Jagdeo added 35 assists, and Jillian Acevedo had 25 digs. The Lightning hit .127 on the evening.
In the victory for the Pioneers, Kelly Helfrich tallied a team-high 19 kills to go along with 18 digs. Megan Maher added 10 kills, 17 assists, and 11 digs, and Michelle Leeder tallied eight kills and 15 digs. Setter Jillian Bronowich added 18 assists. For the evening, William Paterson University hit .151.
The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday evening as Lehman will enter the 2009 CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on the No. 5 seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island at the APEX Center. Start-time for the match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
