SUNY OLD WESTBURY DOWNS LEHMAN COLLEGE IN INTENSE NON-CONFERENCE MATCH

The Lehman College women's volleyball team (6-10 Overall, 3-2 CUNYAC) dropped a hard-fought non-conference match, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury (8-13 Overall, 0-4 Skyline) by scores of 22-25, 23-25, and 24-26 Thursday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx. The Lightning gave it their all and came within a point of taking the third set, but the Panthers ended up capturing all three sets to complete a sweep of sets.

 

Despite the loss for Lehman College, sparkplug Gerri-Ann Martin put forth a quality performance by recording a team-high eight kills to go along with five digs. Setter Lisa Jagdeo had a fine all-around match as she 19 assists, six digs, and two kills, and veteran Jillian Acevedo added a match-high 15 digs to go along with four service aces and three assists. Jennifer Winkler also had five kills.

 

In the victory for the Panthers, Kristina Giordano led the way with 13 assists, eight digs, six kills, and five services aces. Maya James Stokes also hurt the Lightning with 10 digs and six kills, and Ashley Greene recorded eight kills. Alyssa Clifton and Shari Quiles added 11 digs apiece.

 

For the match, the Panthers hit .141 compared to .059 for Lehman College. SUNY Old Westbury also did a fine job defending the Lightning attacks as the Panthers recorded seven block solos on the evening, including five from Tonya Miller. The Lightning had 13 service aces compared to 10 for SUNY Old Westbury.

 

The Lightning will return to action Monday afternoon as the team will compete in a CUNYAC multi-match on Columbus Day. Lehman will battle Baruch College at 9:00am, and that will be followed by an 11:00am contest with the Cougars of Medgar Evers College.
