The Lehman College women's volleyball team (12-18 Overall, 6-3 CUNYAC) saw their bid for a CUNYAC championship come to an end Friday evening as the Lightning fell to the Bearcats of Baruch College (26-8 Overall, 8-1) by scores of 13-25, 18-25, 25-16, and 16-25 at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of the City College of New York.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, standout outside-hitter Gerri-Ann Martin completed her season in fashion, tallying a match-high 15 kills to go along with 13 digs and three assists. Racine Brown also chipped in with a tremendous performance as she finished with 10 kills, and Lisa Jagdeo was terrific in a losing cause, tallying 31 assists and recording 10 digs. Jillian Acevedo had 19 digs, and Jennifer Winkler had 10. As a team, the Lightning hit .095. Following the defeat, Lehman College head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.
“Our team developed great chemistry this season, and I feel as though we made great strides this season,” Lucena said. “We have some great players here and I believe the pieces are in place for this team to improve and establish itself as even more of a force in 2010 and beyond. We played hard tonight, but Baruch has a very good team and they were a little better than us. This team learned a lot this season, and we'll use those lessons learned moving forward. I'm very proud of the girls.”
For the Bearcats in the victory, it was Christina Pierre leading the way for her team with a team-high 13 kills to go along with three block assists. Carissa Hoover also chipped in with 10 kills and three service aces, and Lauren Hayden and Mayra Estepan added seven kills apiece. Melinda Santiago also tallied a match-high 34 assists. The Bearcats hit .213 on the evening.
Baruch College would eventually fall in the championship game later that evening to the CCNY Beavers who made it a clean sweep on the evening, turning back Hunter College in the semifinals 3-0 before silencing the Bearcats 3-0 to take the championship crown.
