Women's Volleyball Falls to Top CUNYAC Opponent

Lightning Lose Early Season Showdown With Hunter College

Looking to make an early season statement against one of the CUNYAC's top teams on Tuesday evening, the Lehman College Lightning lost focus, and in turn the game, in three straight sets to drop the conference matchup to Hunter College (3-2 overall, 3-0 CUNYAC) and fall to 2-3 on the season.

"It's about concentration," said Lehman coach Wolfgang Lucena, "and tonight we didn't have enough of it."

The Hawks took the first set in commanding fashion, 25-8, before Lehman mounted a counterattack that left them just short in the second and third sets, losing both 25-17.

In addition to battling the skillful Hunter players, Lehman also had to deal with an early health scare by junior outside hitter Gerri-Ann Martin who suffered an apparent ankle injury which forced her to miss a portion of the action.  Martin did return, however, to play at a high level for the duration of the match.

For Lehman, sophomore Yamilka Vicente played well in defeat while teammate Besa Zabelaj was outstanding in the losing effort.

"Besa was the leader of the game tonight," said Lucena.

Lehman returns to action on Thursday evening when they host Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m. at the Apex Center on its Bronx campus.
