Women's Volleyball Opens Season With Loss

The Lehman College women's volleyball team (0-1 overall, 0-0 CUNYAC) fell to host William Patterson University (3-0 overall, 0-0 NJAC) on Tuesday evening by the score of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-11 to open its 2010 season.

Lehman looked to be on its way early as the Lightning scored the first five points of the match behind the serving of Lisa Jagdeo and some fine net play by Gerri-Ann Martin and Racine Brown who both recorded kills during the run.  The Lightning outburst to start the game prompted a quick timeout by Pioneer head coach Sandy Ferrarella.

Following the stoppage in play, William Patterson settled down, eventually gaining the lead at 13-12 on a kill by Kim Runge.  With the score 15-13, William Patterson proceeded to run off five straight points with senior Michelle Leeder serving, eventually building a 20-14 lead on its way to taking the first set.

The second set once again showcased William Patterson's Leeder, who helped turn an 18-11 lead into a decisive 25-12 second set victory and commanding two sets to none advantage.  Not to be outdone by her fellow upperclassman from the service line, the junior Runge led the charge in the third set as the Pioneers ran off eight straight points to open up a 5-5 game on their way to the three set win.

Lehman's Racine Brown (six kills) and Jennifer Winkler (five kills) led the way in a losing effort for the Lightning while setter Lisa Jagdeo contributed 17 assists.

The Lightning return to action on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. when they welcome Ramapo College to their Bronx campus.
