Lightning Women Can't Rise to Level of Eagles in Losing to Mary Washington

Box Score

Jan. 9, 2012

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - With two straight blowout wins in their back pocket, the Lehman women were riding high entering play on Monday afternoon against No. 15 ranked University of Mary Washington.

But the Eagles quickly showed why all but one of their wins came by at least 12 points as they blew past the Lightning with ease, winning 81-41 behind 23 points in 22 minutes from Jenna McRae, and improved to 13-0 on the season.

Lehman was led by Paula Robinson, who did her best to pick up the scoring slack left by an absent Amanda De La Cruz with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting.

The Eagles forced 33 Lightning turnovers, which led to 37 points, compared to 12 points off 15 Mary Washington turnovers for Lehman.

Despite falling behind 10-0 in a hurry, the Lightning was able to remain within striking distance for much of the first half.  With 6:28 to go the Lightning trailed by only nine, 25-16, after a jump shot by Alicia McDaniel.  However, a 7-2 run to close the half left Mary Washington up 35-20 at the break.

The Eagles then scored the first seven points out of the locker room.  A jumper by Sarah Jones with 11:29 remaining gave Mary Washington a 30-point cushion, which it eventually built on down the stretch before the final buzzer sounded.

In addition to the turnover differential, Mary Washington dominated Lehman on the backboards with a 45-30 rebounding advantage.

Next up for the Lightning is a CUNYAC showdown with Baruch College on Wednesday night.
