BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball team had a record-setting night on Tuesday, beating host Medgar Evers College 58-9. Freshman guard Jennifer Navarro scored a career-high 24 points, as Lehman held the Cougars to zero points in the first half.
In the first 20 minutes, Lehman outscored MEC 45-0. Lehman made 47.5 percent of the shots taken in the half, while Medgar (0-6, 0-1 CUNYAC) went 0-for-19.
The Lightning (1-4, 1-1 CUNYAC) picks up their first win of the season by shooting 37.9 percent from the floor. Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland), a freshman, was the star of the show, making nine shots from the field, including six three-pointers. She added three assists and eight steals.
For the game, junior Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y./Taft Educational Center) recorded her second double-double of the season, with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists, while sophomore Shalaya Nieves (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) had four points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
The Lightning will look to build on this success this coming weekend, as Lehman heads to the Optimist Tournament at Salisbury (Md.) University. Lehman will face the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Friday night, before facing either the hosts or Valley Forge Christian on Saturday.
