RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's basketball took to the hardwood today, hosting St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn at the Peter Jay Sharp Center, on the campus of the College of Mt. St. Vincent. The Lady Bears walked away with the 71-51 win, dropping Lehman to 1-7 on the season. SJC improved to 4-4.
Lehman dug an early hole, falling behind 19-10 at the 11:31 mark of the first half, But the Lightning rallied, and eventually took a 28-27 lead with just 3:52 to go, on a steal and fast break layup by sophomore Shalaya Nieves (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney).
The score remained tight, with the Lady Bears taking a slim two-point margin into halftime, 34-32.
Play was balanced early in the second half, with senior Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) making a pair of free throws at 17:39, making the score 38-36 for SJC.
From there, the guests went on a run, and Lehman went cold. The Lady Bears blew the game open, leading by as many as 22, en route to the win.
On the afternoon, Castro-Lopez and freshman Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) each scored 12 points, while Nieves chipped in 11. Castro-Lopez added 10 rebounds, giver her her first double-double of the season.
The Lightning will take a little time off to focus on final exams, and won't play again until Dec. 20, when the Eagles of St. Joseph's of Long Island come up to the Bronx.
