NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Behind another strong pitching performance from starter Sheila San Andres, the Lehman softball team defeated host Mount Saint Mary College, 5-4, in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader to run its winning streak to four games before dropping the second game, 11-0, to push its overall record to 12-16.

The sophomore righty surrendered 12 hits over seven innings, but only walked two and made big pitches when it counted, stranding 10 Mount baserunners.

For the fourth game in a row the Lightning jumped on top first, scoring two in the top of the first inning on a two-run triple by the red-hot Jelsey Cox, who was on an RBI tear entering the game, having driven in nine in her previous five contests.

Mount got one back in its half of the first and another in the second before the Lightning tacked on a third run in the top of the third inning on yet another run-scoring hit by Cox.

In the sixth Vania Cadet added her name to the scoring summary by driving in Toni Angel Puya to make it 4-2 in favor of the Lightning.

San Andres faced her biggest crisis in the bottom of the sixth when the Knights loaded the bases with two outs.  A run already home, the Lightning escaped with the lead intact when Ashley Peel was forced out at third on a ball put in play by Ashley Schirripa for the final out of the inning.

Lehman added an unearned run in the seventh and then held its collective breath as Mount had the winning runs on base before Lacey Kehlenbeck's liner was turned into a game-ending double play with Caitlin Maynes caught off second base.

The win was San Andres' seventh of the season.  Cox finished the day 2-for-4, as did Ortiz, who raised her season average to an eye-popping .522.

Lehman was not as fortunate in the second game as the combination of Maynes and Amanda Barrese held the Lightning to just two hits in an 11-0 win in five innings.

A single doubleheader remains on the regular season schedule for the Lightning, slated for April 26 against St. Joseph's College (BK), which will also serve as Senior Day.
