Late Rally Falls Short for Lehman Men's Basketball

Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team rallied late, but could not overcome the host Bloodhounds of John Jay College, losing 86-78 on Monday evening.

Lehman (7-13, 2-9 CUNYAC) led late in the first half, when Driton Hasangjekaj (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) drained a threeball, on a pass from classmate Olu Williams (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton). John Jay would recapture the lead minutes later, and led 47-40 at the half.

In the second stanza, the John Jay (12-8, 8-3 CUNYAC) lead quickly swelled to double figures, with the Bloodhounds eventually leading by as many as 22 points. However, the Lightning refused to yield.

A 13-0 run was sparked by reserve guard Ryan Alvarado (New York, N.Y./Urban Peace), who netted 18 points in limited action. The Lehman defense was able to lock down John Jay's offense, who made their last basket with 4:46 to play in the game. The Lightning continued to make it interesting, and got as close as two possessions with 15 ticks left. But it was not in the cards for Lehman.

Hasangjekaj led the Lightning with 21 points and nine rebounds. Alvarado was the second leading scorer, with junior Erasmo Soto (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) chipping in 11.

For the game, Lehman shot the ball well, making 40.9% of their shots. However, John Jay managed to shoot 46.8%.

Lehman will host Brooklyn College on Friday night, February 1, at 7:00 p.m.
