ALLENTOWN, Penn. – The Lehman College women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, to a tough squad from St Joseph's College of Brooklyn, on Saturday afternoon, 85-78, in the opening round of the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament, hosted by Cedar Crest College. The Lightning will now face the hosts at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday in the Consolation Game. Cedar Crest lost to NYU Polytechnic, 61-59, on Saturday as well.
The game was nip and tuck through the first 35 minutes, before the Bears (2-2) were able to pull away. On the day, Lehman (1-1) did not shoot the ball well, connecting on just 31.2% of their shots.
Five Lightning players scored in double digits, led by junior forward Shalaya Nieves (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney), with 20 points. Freshman Amely Del Rosario (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) knocked down 16 points, as sophomore Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./ Alexander Hamilton) added 14. Classmate Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) chipped in 12, and Genesis Liberato (Santo Domingo, D.R./Liceo Ramon Matias Mella) added 10.
On the boards, Nieves and Lightbourne had double-doubles, with 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
