Lightning Rally, but Women's Volleyball Falls to Hunter in CUNYAC Semifinals

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Friday afternoon, dropping a hard fought, 3-1, decision to Hunter in the Semifinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference/Pepsi Championships. Set scores were 25-18, 18-25, 25-12, 25-20.

Lehman was the #3 seed in the Championships, and Hunter the #2. The two teams battled through four sets until Hunter claimed the victory.

After falling short in the first match, the Lightning stormed back in the second to knot the match at one apiece. The Hawks pulled away to claim the third set but Lehman would not go down without a fight. The fourth set had eight different tie scores and four lead changes. With the score knotted at 19, Hunter scored six of the last seven points to take the set and the match.

Lehman was led by a pair of First Team CUNYAC All Stars in Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). Aquino led the team with 20 kills and two block assists, and English guided the Lightning with five service aces, a solo block, and two block assists. Second Team All-CUNY selection Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) chipped in with 38 assists.

Freshman middle hitter Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) managed six kills and two digs, while sophomore hitter Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) knocked in four kills and two service aces.

Playing her final game of her collegiate career for the Lightning, senior outside hitter Besa Zabelaj (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) tallied six kills, two digs, and produced six points.

Lehman concludes the season with a 22-8 record.
